We are all from in or around Oxford and it was here that the three of us first started singing together. Every Saturday morning, we would rehearse with the Oxford Girls’ Choir with musical director Richard Vendome. Being part of a good choir in Oxford provided opportunities for working with coaches in many different areas of music: Roderick Williams, working on Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas; Vivien Ellis taught us folk songs; and Stevie Wishart introduced us not only to Hildegard of Bingen but to her own contemporary compositions too. During our time with the Girls’ Choir, we were all involved in projects with Stevie Wishart performing Hildegard’s music at concerts throughout Europe. In fact, we still use Stevie’s Hildegard notations today.
After finishing school, we went off to different universities and to do different things and so it wasn’t until 2006, when we were all living in London, that we had the idea of getting together once more to sing. Our first concert, A Circle of Songs, was performed in February 2007 to raise money for Save the Children. Since then, we have performed all over London and Oxfordshire, from university colleges to medieval chapels and underground railway eaves. Our repertoire reflects the style of music we most enjoy performing but we also look for music that is a bit unusual, and songs that we can make our own. Through our repertoire we aim to keep our programmes as varied as possible. We hope that people come away from our concerts having heard something new or they feel inspired to write something new for us.
