Clemmie Franks

Clemmie is a versatile Mezzo-Soprano who enjoys exploring new musical territory and pushing musical boundaries. One of sixteen vocalists selected for the Pulse solo vocal ensemble led by Mary King at Southbank Centre in 2009, she now studies at TrinityLaban with Alison Wells and enjoys performing as a soloist and ensemble vocalist throughout the UK. During her time at Trinity she has performed in masterclasses with Sarah Connolly and Harry Bickett, enjoyed performing with ensembles –Trinity Early Music Vocal Ensemble and Consort Song Group under Tim Travers-Brown – as well as performing in Opera Scenes, including ‘Maman’ in L’enfant et les sortilèges (Ravel), ‘Marcellina’ and ‘Cherubino’ in Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart), ‘Tom’ in Circus Tricks a new opera working with Tête à Tête Opera company.

She has been involved in array of diverse projects, including: touring in Europe as the alto soloist for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment with Schola Pietatis Antonio Vivaldi; providing backing vocals for a variety of internationally acclaimed artist’s including Bobby McFerrin and cult rock group Spiritualized; being one of five solo ensemble vocalists for the premiere of The Bee Symphony as part of Pestival Festival in the Queen Elizabeth Hall; and touring internationally with early music group Sinfonye, with whom she will rejoin, with the other members of Voice, this August for a BBC Singers Prom at Cadogan Hall and a new recording.

She was recently a finalist in the Patricia Routledge National English Song Competition has been asked to join the newly formed Britten Sinfonia Voices under Eamonn Dougan, who will perform Berlioz L’enfance du Christ conducted by Sir Mark Elder in December 2011 and she will be singing 2nd Women for Dartington’s Advance Baroque Opera production of Dido and Aeneas with Steven Devine and Tim Hopkins this summer.  Other London-based vocal group projects include film soundtrack recordings with London Voices, singing with Helen Chadwick Group, and vocal trio Voice.

In addition to her singing work, after finishing her Masters in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, Clemmie has worked as a promoter and programmer in Jazz and World Music. Work includes coordinating the performance strand of the East Festival with Serious 2007 – 2009, Projects/ Production Manager for The Vortex Jazz Club and Hackney Cooperative Developments, as well as freelance work for the Barbican, Jazz at Lincoln Centre and Southbank Centre.
